Steel Reserve 211: The Pinnacle of Human Achievement in Beer

April 1st, 2008 – 3:50 pm
Filed as: Strong, Lager, Domestic, Beer

Cracked the cap on the 750ml can and poured into my favorite frosted mug, it was a hot afternoon so I was glad I remembered to throw it in the freezer the night before. The beer poured out of the can a hazy straw color with minimal head and low carbonation. Before I […]

Doppelbock Session: Ayinger Celebrator

January 4th, 2008 – 6:45 pm

Let me be the first second to admit it: I’ve fallen off the beer blogging bandwagon. I’ve been missing Session deadlines left and right. Heck, the last time I participated was way back in August. Why the lack of posts?
I guess I had just gotten a bit bored with my pedestrian […]

Moretti La Rossa Doppio Malto

April 30th, 2007 – 9:11 pm

I picked up a bottle of Moretti’s Doppelbock while I was getting a Godmother at Bay Cities. I used to drink their pale lager every once in a while with a college friend who had studied abroad in Italy.
She used to drink it at the bars there, surrounded by old, mustachioed Italians who looked […]

Spaten Optimator

April 3rd, 2007 – 1:33 pm
Filed as: Lager, German, Bock, Beer

Like I mentioned last week, Spaten Optimator wins big points in the cool name department. It ranks higher in alcohol content as well, with 7.2% as opposed to the Pils 5%. Both are available in 16.9 oz. sizes at Gelson’s for $2.59. Strangely enough, they don’t sell the Pils in 12 oz […]

Czechvar aka Budweiser Budvar

March 30th, 2007 – 7:19 pm

Way back in August of 2005, I went to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival with a group of 12 Northwestern students. They were bringing their play out for 30 performances, one each day at 3:30. Riding on my actress girlfriend’s coattails, I lived with them in a five bedroom apartment right across the street […]

Spaten Pils

Filed as: Lager, German, Pilsner, Beer

Although the name isn’t as awesome, I’d say Pils has a leg up on it’s cousin Optimator. Both can be found in 16.9 oz. bottles at Gelson’s for $2.59.
Spaten (which is German for ’spade’) is brewed in Munich by the same people who make Franziskaner. Can’t make it to Munich for a tour […]

Sam Adam’s Black Lager

March 28th, 2007 – 12:02 pm

They’re not kidding, this beer is black. Like Guinness black. Same color head as Guinness too, but not nearly as thick. Damnit, it kind of smells like Guinness too. Medium body. Very roasted taste, with a coffee-ish sort of bitterness to it.
The coffee-like flavors are reminiscent of some incredible Green […]
