Moretti La Rossa Doppio Malto

April 30th, 2007 – 9:11 pm

I picked up a bottle of Moretti’s Doppelbock while I was getting a Godmother at Bay Cities. I used to drink their pale lager every once in a while with a college friend who had studied abroad in Italy.
She used to drink it at the bars there, surrounded by old, mustachioed Italians who looked […]

Coachella 2007

April 28th, 2007 – 1:47 pm
Filed as: Dear Diary, Events

Down in Coachella for the weekend. Stuck with seven dollar Heinekens. Bleh.
Well, I came for the music, not the beer. Thank god for a cooler full of Tecate. Getting pumped for some great bands today; Kings of Leon, New Pornographers, Ozomatli, !!!, The Good the Bad & the Queen, Chili […]

Carlsberg Elephant

April 25th, 2007 – 8:52 pm
Filed as: Danish, Zoo Brew, Strong, Beer

Carlsberg Elephant is a malty, piss yellow beer with a heavy smell. Head is fizzy and immediately disappears. Tastes skunky and bitter. Palate is thin and grainy. That malt liquor taste is way more liquor than malt.
Elephant is 7.2% alcohol, which would explain why I thought it tasted so bad. […]

Hacker-Pschorr Hefe Weisse

April 24th, 2007 – 1:05 pm
Filed as: German, Wheat, Beer

I think I’ve found a new favorite hefeweizen. I took a bottle up with me when I went camping a few weeks ago. Hacker-Pschorr is 5.5% alcohol by volume, it pours a cloudy honey-amber color. Light and fruity aromas. Wheaty, of course, with faint smells of banana. Lots of bubbles […]

Ralph’s on Lincoln, Across from Bay Cities

April 19th, 2007 – 11:47 am

Its overwhelming how much beer they have here. I guess its not that surprising considering the overall size of the store. I would hate getting groceries here, its just too big. Helpful hint: the beer is in the front, to the right.
Great for picking up a six pack of something new for […]

Redhook Long Hammer IPA

April 18th, 2007 – 11:26 am

Grabbed a pint at Sonny McLean’s. They also have the ESB and the Blonde on tap, althought the last couple of times I’ve been there, they’ve been out of the Blonde and it hasn’t been replaced. Maybe they are making way for another Anderson Valley beer?
Interesting to know that Red Hook was just […]

Singha Thai Lager

April 17th, 2007 – 4:57 pm
Filed as: Asian, Beer

This lager comes from Boon Rawd Brewery, in Bangkok. Boon Rawd? I will give them the benefit of the doubt, and assume its not some lame made-up words like “Häagen-Dazs,” but seriously, it sounds like it’s the name of one of Kim Jung Il’s panthers from Team America: World Police (whoops, wrong link, […]

Alabama, You Got the Weight on Your Shoulders

April 16th, 2007 – 2:44 pm

Anyone see the movie SLC Punk, with Matthew Lillard and the amazing Christopher McDonald? It’s a very amusing day-in-the-life look at anarchic punks living in Utah in the mid-80s. The movie is narrated Ferris Bueller-style, with Stevo breaking the 4th wall whenever he pleases. One of my favorite anecdotes from the movie […]

The Great Outdoors

April 9th, 2007 – 2:12 pm
Filed as: Dear Diary

Haven’t been camping in a long while, but I am going up to Sycamore Canyon for a couple days. I can’t remember how long it’s been since I’ve gone a day without a computer. I’m ready for some biking, surfing, and of course beer drinking.
Beers that are going with me:

Quilmes
Shiner Bock
Rogue Dead Guy […]

Samuel Smith Organically Produced Ale

April 9th, 2007 – 1:45 pm

I’ve tried his Oatmeal Stout and his Nut Brown Ale, but Samuel Smith Organic was something I had never seen before. I came across it one day at The Farms, a charming mom & pop grocery/deli on Montana (they make incredible sandwiches by the way). A 550mL bottle set me back 4 bucks.
The […]

Shipyard Export Ale

April 6th, 2007 – 3:36 pm
Filed as: Domestic, Pale Ale, Beer

To cap off the evening at FO, I tried the Shipyard Export Ale. This was up on their chalkboard under a header that said something like, “Feeling Adventurous?” or something like that. The blurb read, “Buttermilk Biscuit w/ a tangy finish.” Sold.
This beer poured out a golden blonde. Mostly diminishing, slight […]

Young’s Oatmeal Stout

April 6th, 2007 – 3:25 pm
Filed as: English, Stout, Beer

After that Rogue Hazelnut Brown, this stout was a welcome relief. It arrived with a huge, thick, light red head. There was great lacing all the way up the glass. The aroma was smokey, with a toasted taste that reminded me of burning mesquite. Young Oatmeal Stout has a medium body, […]

Rogue Hazelnut Brown

April 6th, 2007 – 3:15 pm
Filed as: Domestic, Brown, Beer

OK, I had much higher hope for this beer, because I generally enjoy Brown ales, and Rogue is a well-respected brewer. But last week at Father’s Office, the Hazelnut Brown was definitely not living up to expectations. Poured a dark dark brown, like diet coke or something. Fully diminishing head, and not […]

Fischer Amber

April 6th, 2007 – 3:11 pm

Alright, I’ve been filling up my notebook faster than I’ve been writing posts, so it’s time for me to 23 skidoo you some reviews. Hate to do it, but yeah, I’ve got to zippity-do-da you some reviews.
Next week I think I’m going to get into mainstream beers. I just realized, I’ve sorta been […]

Sonny McLean’s: You Better Believe They’ve Got Sam Adams

April 4th, 2007 – 7:29 pm
Filed as: Los Angeles, Bars

March Madness is over, and baseball season is upon us. And what goes best with baseball, besides peanuts and crackerjacks? You guessed it: Beer. There are tons of crappy sports bars all over LA that serve their purpose, but wouldn’t you rather go somewhere exotic for the afternoon? How […]
